Origin of Taekwondo : Martial Art from South Korea

Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art and Combat Sport involving punching and remonstrating ways.

It has been a popular sport in the country which numerous academy scholars learn and share in competitions.

In addition to its five tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, tone- control and insuperable spirit, the sport requires three physical chops poomsae( 품새), kyorugi( 겨루기) and gyeokpa( 격파).

Poomsae are patterns that demonstrate a range of remonstrating, punching and blocking ways, kyorugi involves the kind of sparring seen in the Olympics, and gyeokpa is the art of breaking rustic boards. Taekwondo also occasionally involves the use of munitions similar as brands and nun- chucks. Taekwondo interpreters wear a livery known as a dobok.

Taking a look back at early history, korea was firstly divided into 3 fiefdoms, one in the north and two in the south which also took up the entire Korean promontory and also part of what is China and Russia moment.

Subak-

These three fiefdoms formed the common system of unarmed combat called Subak. And each one contributed their own specific ways and training frequently grounded on the terraina and environmental influences.

Subak flourished both in military training as well as culturally getting a veritably popular sport and form of entertainment. It’s indeed said that the king rehearsed the art.

Subak faded with the fall of the fiefdoms and the rise of the Joseon dynasty.During the joseon period in Korea, there was an emphasis on literally and artistic trades over the physical combat of martial trades and Subak lost it’s dominance and it’s practise was confined to competition and sport.

Taekkyeon-

At some point during the Joseon dynasty, the art of Taekkyeon surfaced. Taekkyeon utilizes ways to trip, gamble or take your opponent o balance.

It surfaced as a popular art and indeed remains moment in competition and exhibition.

Japanese Occupation of Korea-

In 1914, a man named Hwang Kee was born and set up a passion in the martial trades. He was said to have considerably studied and learned Taekkyeon during high academy.

Under the Japanese occupation of Korea, it’s believed that numerous native Korean martial trades were banned or confined with Koreans having to train in the Japanese trades.

Kee putatively had attracted the attention of Japanese authorities so he sought out a new path and headed to China.

While living in China, Kee claimed to have trained in the Chinese art of Yang Kung Fu, studying it’s e ectiveness in close quarter combat. In addition to his native Korean roots and Chinese training, he also studied Okinawan Karate.

End of WW II and Japanese Occupation( 1945)-

When the Japanese Occupation fell in the end of world war II, Kee returned to Korea and came one of five authors of a new martial art system. These seminaries or Kwans were established by martial artists that had a misture of a Japanese and Chinese influences,

The Korean War-

At the end of the Korean war, four further seminaries joined and together they make up the original nine kwans and created the foundation of Tang Soo Do.

Unifying the Kwans-

Each Kwan tutored their own interpretation of the trades and their influence and fashionability spread snappily throughout Korea indeed into the service.

In 1952 the chairman of South Korea suggested that the Kwans be combined into a single unified art. The Kwans began to work together and called this art Tae Soo Do.

Tae Soo Do-

Kee continued to develop his own training and his art of Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo went on to come one of the most dominant performances of the art.

During the conformation of this unified art, general Choi Hong Hi and also one of the founding Kwans suggested the name Taekwondo.

Tae Kwon Do-

In 1959, the Korean Taekwondo association was formed in order to complete junction of the trades. Choi did n’t completely agree with the politics as the South Korean government did not want any addition of North Korean martial trades while Choi felt they should include all Korean trades.

In 1966, Choi broke o and formed his own association, the International Taekwondo Federation.

International Taekwondo Federation-

The South Korean government ultimately dropped support of the ITF and Choi established headquarters in Toronto, Canada.

In 1973, the South Korean ministry of Culture, sports and tourism established Kukkiwon, the world Taekwondo Academy. Together with the KTA they formed the World Taekowndo Federation to promote the art as an transnational sport.

In 1962, Taekwondo was introduced to America when Jhoon Goo Rhee opened his first American academy in Washington DC.

Taekwondo continues to flourish moment with numerous di erent academy and variations and is presently only one of two asian trades to be included as an olympic sport.
