Korean dining culture is more than just eating food as it has many rules and regulations that are passed down from generations to maintain the tradition of respect and manners.

Etiquette

Before Eating

  • Wait for Elders: To show respect, younger ones wait for the eldest one to take their first bite.
  • Showing Gratitude: Koreans say “잘 먹겠습니다” before eating to express gratitude.
  • Seating: Usually the host sits opposite of guests.

During Meals

  • Sharing: Take small portions from the side dishes to allow everyone to enjoy.
  • No Waste: Try to finish the whole meal.

After the Meal

  • Gratitude: Say “잘 먹었습니다” after eating.
  • Utensils: Place spoons and chopsticks beside the bowl or plate.

Proper Use of Utensils

  • Chopstick and spoon: Use spoon for rice and soup and chopsticks for side dishes.
  • Bowls: Avoid lifting bowls off the table.
  • Use both hands: Use both hands to pass items and accept things from elders.

Drinking Etiquette

Drinking Etiquette
  • Pour for others: Before pouring for yourself always pour drinks for others first.
  • Receive from both hands: Always use both hands to receive drinks from elders.
  • Turn Away: Slightly turn your head and cover your mouth when drinking alcohol in front of elders.

Korean dining etiquette emphasizes respect, consideration and harmony. These customs turn every meal into a meaningful social experience, showing that good manners are just as important as good food in Korea.
