Korean traditional stories are passed down orally for generations, teaching life lessons and moral values. Each story reflects the moral beliefs and cultural spirit of Korea. Among the most famous Korean stories are Heungbu and Nolbu, Filial Daughter Shim Cheong, The Tale of the Turtle and the Rabbit and Chunhyangjeon.
Heungbu and Nolbu
“Heungbu and Nolbu” is the story of the good Heungbu and the evil Nolbu. Nolbu is a wicked and greedy man who takes all the property of his parents and refuses to share with Heungbu.
One day, Heungbu helps an injured swallow by fixing its broken leg. The swallow returns and gives Heungbu a magic gourd seed on behalf of his kindness. When the gourd grows and is cut, it brings him wealth. Seeing this, Nolbu tries to copy his brother by harming a swallow and pretending to help it. However, when Nolbu opens his gourd, monsters and disasters come out instead of treasure. Koreans often compare Heungbu to a kind and honest man, while Nolbu is compared to a wicked, greedy, and spiteful man.
Filial Daughter Shim Cheong
The Story of Shim Cheong is a touching tale about respect and love for one’s parents. Shim Cheong is a devoted daughter who lives with her blind father. When she learned that offering 3,000 seok of rice would restore her father’s sight, she jumped into the sea to earn it. But she did not die with the help of the Dragon King, Sim Cheong’s life was saved and she was reunited with her father.
The Tale of the Turtle and the Rabbit
The Tale begins with the turtle searching for a cure for his king. The cure is the liver of a rabbit. Turtle, a loyal subject, embarks on a journey in search of the rabbit. Rabbit is deceived by the turtle’s lies and captured by the Dragon King but manages to escape by lying that he left his liver in the mountains.
The rabbit symbolizes a quick-witted and intelligent character while the turtle symbolizes a loyal subject who always thinks of his king, even in difficult situations.
Chunhyangjeon
“Chunhyangjeon” is a beautiful love story between the wise and beautiful woman, Seong Chunhyang and the handsome and capable man, Mongryong Lee. Chunhyang and Mongryong fall in love at first sight but their different social statuses ultimately lead to their separation. When Mong-ryong leaves to study, a corrupt local official tries to force Chunhyang to become his servant. She refuses and is imprisoned. In the end, Mong-ryong returns as a secret royal inspector and punishes the corrupt official. Chunhyang’s loyalty and courage are rewarded and the couple is reunited.
These famous Korean stories have remained popular as they teach timeless lessons and moral values. Korean folktales continue to teach people and preserve the cultural values of Korea. They are not just stories from the past but meaningful lessons for life today.
